SYLVIA & FJORDSONG (Fee yord’song) is a Scandinavian Variety and
Old Time Dance Band that plays primarily in the Northwest and Arizona. They
have
performed in Finland, and Sweden and have recorded cassettes and CD’s
of Scandinavian programs. The leader of the band is accordionist and vocalist,
Sylvia Jorgensen. The bands other members are: Carl Nyberg who sings, plays
hoedowns and Cajun fiddle, banjo, and guitar.
They are an entertaining band and enjoy playing for dances, shows, and polka
masses.
Sylvia’s father, Sig Johnson, was of Swedish-Finn ancestry and
played the accordion for dances. It was natural that Sylvia followed
in his footsteps and formed her own dance band when just fourteen years
old. She worked her way through college performing on the accordion and
became an elementary music specialist in Puyallup Schools. She formed
the Fjordsong Band in the 80’s and became active again in the Scandinavian
community. (Their first show in Astoria was in 1986). They twice played
for Skadi-fest in Turlock, CA and several times for Scandinavian Days
in Chisholm MN.
The band has branched out from Scandinavian old time waltzes, schottisches,
and polkas to those of other ethnic groups, such as, Slovenian, German,
and Polish. This gives them opportunity to participate in Old Time polka
festivals around the country and to play the polka mass. The past several
years has found them at “polkafests” in Las Vegas, Sheridan,
Wyoming, Mesa, Arizona, and Washington and Oregon. They have played the
Polka Mass at the Lawrence Welk theatre in Branson, Missouri.
At present, the band winters in Arizona playing Old Time music for RV
parks and polka clubs there. When back to the NW, they play dances one
a month for Sons of Norway in Everett, WA and annually for the Lucia
Bride Festival at Seattle’s Swedish Club.
